Your first priority should be to find him another psychiatrist. Chronic pain and depression are frequent fellow travellers. An expert should be able to do something for your husband unless his case is truly exception, which is unlikely. Sad to say, there are many many less than competent doctors out there. If you don't know how to find an expert, go to www.nami.org/epa where there's a list of psychiatrists by state who have received NAMI's Best Pdocs of the Year awards.

The behavior you describe is very typical. Hang in there and concentrate on finding a good pdoc. If he's not interested in seeing one, tell him how dangerous inadequately treated depression is. I've written many posts about this and you'll find a bunch right here on Ask Anne as well as elsewehre. All the books cover how to get a consultation and why and what it can accomplish.

Hang in there,

Anne
