I was on cipralex, same thing as lexapro i believe. It was driving me insane too. Here's what I did...
My psychiatrist prescribed efforex. Here's the difference and why it is working for me.
My naturopath said I was low on all of the neurotransmitters via a written test. Cipralex/lexapro decrease dopamine and tries to maintain serotonin levels. Antidepressants DO NOT increase neurotransmitters, they just recycle them. Cipralex lowered my dopamine levels of which I am already critically low on. Sometimes I wanted to crush my head to stop the horrible feelings and side effects.
Efforex helps to recycle serotonin, dopamine and neophenephrine. That is it helps to maintain higher levels of more neurotransmitters so I'm having less side effects and it has calmed me down quite a lot. The main side effect now is being exhausted all the time but its good to get extra sleep when under all this stress.
To REBUILD my neurotransmitters, my naturopath is prescribing a number of supplements like SAM-e, Gaba which are available at natural supplement stores. However, you need to know what to get so talk to a naturopath as getting the wrong supplements will make things worse. Try amino acid therapy to help improve these brain vitamins as I call them. Check out serotonin syndrome on the net. I was having symptoms of serotonin syndrome and it is deadly.
Most doctors are totally ignorant about brain chemistry. Ask a psychiatrist as they are usually quite informative. Do get a written test done with a naturopath so you can get an idea of what you are low on.
I was diagnosed with severe depression 3 months ago and have nothing left to fight with. Without the proper meds and supplements I wouldn't even have a chance to hang in there.
