Wow! Very thought provoking. My DH and I just celebrated 15 years of marriage. I had thought I was thru but started seeing a Therapist who also is having me read this book. Folks say I'm sounding stronger. At any rate- verbal abuse when I hear it ("I can't count on you for anything...etc.) has been something I've grappled with in my marriage. As long as I'm willing to look at all the parts of the my life with unflinching honesty and have a plan B--I'll be okay. Yesterday's incident was just wildly stupid and I calmly said "no I don't buy what you are saying" and went to the other room." I'm trying not to pick up the rope. It is very hard and I've become familiar with Al-anon as well as DV people. My spouse denies that he is abusive saying that those groups are for women who get the hell beat out of them. Six months ago he overheard me talking to someone about one of his tirades. Three things are present in abusive relationships--blame, entitlement and control. Those are elements that have existed sometimes more strongly in my marriage and my spouse continues to blame me for the present difficulties since I went to that group for people in abusive relationships. Denial --but fortunately he is taking his medication and talking more with his shrink as well as working his AA program. Would I have jumped into this 15 years ago had I known--well I don't think so despite the fact that I do love him and our boys. I need to begin taking care of myself. I've just been prescriped wellbutrin for adult ADD. After my second fender bender my doc asked me if I have trouble with focus. YES...So hope it will help in my ability to deal with my life's challenges. I'm going to read this thread again.
