It is so often the drama triangle A victim or a target does contribute to the outcome of their situation either constructively or destructively.
At first they can be a true innocent victim - what is happening to them is due to people and circumstances beyond their control - they have truly done nothing to create the circumstances - nothing to cause an attack, or contributed to the cause behind the attack - eg when someone through their own distorted thinking perhaps caused by a mental condition attacks a target - the target never caused the mental condition.

But depending on their response , this can influence the results, it can determine what position the target is in after the attack - in the moment of attack they are a victim - after the moment if they are not destroyed they are a survivor - but they can very naturally continue to think as a victim after the moment instead of like a survivor. By the very nature of their response they can either remain in the position they were in as the target or a victim, or they can change to survivor, or an attacker, or an abuser, or an emotional manipulator. A response has an effect and a pay-off - a response can diffuse or escalate the conflict.

Example/quote
Reactive victims
Reactive victims straddle a fence of being a bully and or victim. They are often the most difficult to identify because at first glance they seem to be targets for other bullies. However, reactive victims often taunt bullies, and bully other people themselves. Most of the incidents are physical in nature. These victims are impulsive and react quickly to intentional and unintentional physical encounters. In some cases, reactive victims begin as victims and become bullies as they try to retaliate. A reactive victim will approach a person who has been bullying him/her and say something like, "You better not bug me today, otherwise I'll tell the teacher and boy, will you be in trouble, so you just better watch out."
Statements such as this are akin to waving a red flag in front of a raging bull, and may provoke a bully into action. Reactive victims then fight back and claim self defense. Reactive victims need to learn how to avoid bullies.
