The main site has links in the resources page, which lead to information on bipolar. Basically, those that suffer with this emotional disorder have periods of mania, and depression. Originally bipolar sufferers were called manic-depressives. During periods of mania, they have an almost euphoric sense of being, which can be perceived in many ways. Some might be considered the life of the party, or the unusually bright and funny person that abounds with energy. This same person may be dealing with STD's, have severe financial problems and have lost their family due to their mania. While they appear jovial, they may also be making some irrational decisions, which lead to problems that can destroy lives and families. On the other end of their disorder, the sufferer may suffer periods of such deep depression, they resort to suicide to end their misery. The length, and depth of the cycle varies, which may lead to the wrong diagnoses if either period lasts for a substantial amount of time. This can lead to the wrong medications, which can accentuate either cycle and cause more problems.
As far as dealing with a person that is bipolar, you may be wasting your time in trying to relate to them if they aren't being treated. Like any emotional disorder, the sufferer may not be aware of their disorder, or refuse to accept they might need some help. Those that are successful with their treatment have a tough time balancing the right medications, while dealing with the racing thoughts, emotional swings, and the stigmas society attaches to their disorder. It's very tough for them, and the constant monitoring of blood chemistry may lead to changing medications due to the possible severe side effects of the medications they are already taking.
Read the archives. You'll find both sides of dealing with bipolar disorder. It's eye opening and gives you insight. Dealing with bipolar requires a deep understanding of the disorder and an extreme amount of patience.
