Yes, sometimes a person in depression will want to go off alone someplace for a while rather than putting the people around him through suffering his disability. At the very least, he is fortunate to have you, someone who understands what he is going through.. Many of us don't have that..
Some time back, my wife made a statement that really cut like a knife.. "Oh for God's sake, cheer up, count your blessings and stop being such a whimp, everyone feels bad once in a while,.. Get over it." ... That shows a perfect example of someone who does NOT understand and makes no effort to do so. It is not easy to just "Get over it", it takes time, understanding and a good doctor.. With these things he may eventually come back to what others may consider normal.. I sincerely hope that thngs work out for you..
