What does she want the land for? What benefit is she going to get out of ownership? What is so critically important to her that you have failed to grasp?

The land is not for sale. She cannot have it. There's nothing that ProfPlum 'has to grasp'.

A good guess would be she resents losing control over direction.

Very few people do enjoy it. That's part of maturity and adulthood. You don't always get what you want--or even what you need (or 'need').

Again, this isn't Prof Plum's problem to fix. It's his wife's issue. As long as he even attempts to appease her or smooth the way or fix the situation to her satisfaction, the longer she will be demanding him to do it. And the wishes will escalate.
