JustJudy;  I am sorry for what you are going through.  My doctor suspected I was bipolar because of my response to the antidepressants.  I was quickly responsive to the medication versus a normal slow steady rise in mood.  I was full of energy and everything was as good as ‘sunshine.’  Even my wife thought everything was great.  What no one knew was

1.      I was beginning to lie.

2.      I had sex with a stripper(risky behavior)

3.      Needed little sleep

4.      Bursts of energy

My doctor after suspecting for 2 months introduced a mood stabilizer.  This is supposed to prevent the mood swings as the antidepressants help prevent the mood crash.  The hard part is finding the right balance.  Ask me any question and I hope I can help.  Remember this is only my point of view and there may be other instances where things may be different.
