Ellen,
When breaking up my ex too said that when he began the relationship he knew it would end. I asked him why anyone would go into a relationship with that idea, he said "I don't know. Maybe some kind of fear."
When I look back at our initial days of dating, he had told me stuff like "let's take it slow, because if we rush into it it won't last", "I just hate dating and just want to settle in a relationship".... he said all these things back then and now he says that he never believed it would last! I screamed at him and told him it just became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Note that he is very negative about everything - for example, if we book a vacation, until the day of the vacation he will not believe that the vacation will actually happen.. so much so that he even thinks the flight might get canceled!
