thanks for the advice. It has helped to talk to a friend or two who are knowledgeable about depression but most of my social circle thinks I should just cut him out of my life. 

It's so hard when you reach out and they withdraw. We recently had an interesting situation where I made a point about something months ago and he just told me that it sunk in. I think they process everything super slowly because so much "bandwidth" is being used by depression. I just need a frank discussion about whether withdrawing is best for us both. What's your situation like?
