Years ago, my mother would blame the entire family for her "failures". Her career was shortened; it was our fault. She was unhappy; it was out fault. We were all terrible and failures because of what we did to her. If only she hadn't met my father. If only things had been better. It was baggage I was supposed to carry since it was my fault, too.
After marriage and my wife's problems, the blame begin again. Everything was my fault. I was terrible and evil for what I did. I, again, was given some baggage to carry. After all, it was my responsibility for not being good enough.
So, here's my new attitude about this baggage: It's bags of crap. If someone gave you a bag of crap and asked you to carry it- would you? Would you recognize the falacy of carrying what someone else realizes is crap and is wanting to pass on to you to ease their burden of useless baggage? I'm thinking no and I'm also thinking many are pressed into this service because they don't realize what they've been given.
Life's too short to carry another person's dreams, anger, sadness, failures and frustration. It's their baggage to carry. If they aren't aware of what they're carrying, it's no service to them, or yourself, to carry it. It needs to be left with the rest of the emotional refuse we accumulate in our travels.
