Looking back on my life, I've often wondered if things had only been different, I might have avoided what I've faced and had been happier. I've also wondered if things might have been worse, which in some of the darkest moments, I would have wondered how they could have been worse.
My therapist told me that one of my problems when dealing with my wife was bringing up the past, which caused many of the problems we faced. Truthfully, when I was first told this, I had a moment when I felt indignant. These wrongs affected me tremendously. How could anyone not recognize the importance of pointing out the relevancy of the past? As the words sank in, I started realizing the importance of moving forward.
I now have a goal to push the past farther and farther away. I don't want to forget the past, but I also don't want to dwell there either. I look at it as a reference for learning and coping.
